Why Quick & Easy Assembly Is a Game Changer
One of the biggest barriers to setting up heavy-duty shelving used to be the complexity of assembly — hours of bolting, drilling, and deciphering cryptic instruction manuals. Modern shelving systems have changed all that. With the right approach, a single person can assemble a full heavy-duty bay in under 20 minutes using just one simple tool. This guide walks you through the process safely and efficiently.
Before You Start: Safety First
Heavy-duty shelving can weigh 30–100kg per unit before any stock is loaded. Taking a few minutes to prepare properly prevents injuries and ensures your shelving performs as rated.
- Read the product manual first. Every Hubrack unit ships with assembly instructions — read them fully before opening any packaging.
- Clear the assembly area. You need at least 1m of clearance on all sides of the unit during assembly.
- Wear appropriate PPE. Steel-capped boots and work gloves are recommended. Heavy steel components can cause serious injuries if dropped.
- Get a second person for tall units. For shelving over 1.8m tall, a second person is strongly recommended to hold uprights steady during assembly.
- Check the floor. Ensure the floor is level. Use a spirit level — even a 5mm slope can affect stability at height.
What You'll Need
Assembly is quick and straightforward — only one basic tool is required:
- A rubber mallet (for seating shelf clips firmly)
- A spirit level
- A tape measure
- A pencil for marking anchor points (if floor-anchoring)
- A drill and appropriate anchors if bolting to the floor or wall
Step-by-Step Assembly Guide
Step 1: Unpack and Inventory All Components
Lay all components out on the floor and check them against the parts list in your manual. For a standard 4-tier unit, you should have:
- 2 × upright frames (left and right)
- 4 × shelf panels
- 8 × shelf clips or locking pins (2 per shelf, front and back)
- Foot pads or levelling feet
- Floor anchor hardware (if included)
If any components are missing or damaged, contact us before proceeding — do not attempt to substitute components from other systems.
Step 2: Attach Foot Pads to Uprights
Slide or clip the foot pads onto the base of each upright frame. These distribute the load across the floor and prevent the uprights from sinking into soft surfaces. If your unit includes levelling feet, adjust them now so both uprights are at equal height.
Step 3: Stand Up the Upright Frames
Stand both upright frames vertically, parallel to each other, at the correct width for your shelf panels. For most units, this is pre-determined by the shelf panel width. Have your second person hold one upright steady while you position the other.
Step 4: Install the Bottom Shelf First
Always start from the bottom and work up. Locate the lowest set of slots on each upright and insert the shelf clips or pins. Slide the bottom shelf panel onto the clips from the front, then press down firmly until you hear or feel the clips lock. Give the shelf a firm upward push to confirm it's seated — it should not lift out without deliberate force.
Tip: Use a rubber mallet to tap clips fully home if they feel stiff. Never force components with a metal hammer — this can deform the clips and compromise load rating.
Step 5: Install Remaining Shelves
Repeat Step 4 for each shelf level, working upward. As you add each shelf, the unit becomes progressively more rigid. Check that each shelf is level before moving to the next.
Step 6: Check Squareness and Level
Once all shelves are installed, check the unit from the front and side:
- The unit should stand perfectly vertical — use a spirit level on the uprights
- The unit should not rock — if it does, adjust the levelling feet until all four corners make firm contact with the floor
- The unit should be square — measure diagonally from corner to corner; both measurements should be equal
Step 7: Floor Anchor (Strongly Recommended for Units Over 1000kg)
For heavy-duty units rated over 1000kg, or any unit in a workplace covered by Australian WHS regulations, floor anchoring is strongly recommended and may be legally required. Use the anchor points on the upright feet and appropriate masonry anchors for concrete floors. If you're unsure, consult a licensed builder or structural engineer.
Step 8: Load from the Bottom Up
Always load the heaviest items on the lowest shelves. This lowers the centre of gravity and significantly improves stability. Never exceed the per-shelf or unit load rating — these are engineering limits, not guidelines.
Common Assembly Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the level check: An unlevel unit will rack (lean) under load, which can cause catastrophic failure.
- Mixing components from different brands: Load ratings are only valid for matched systems. Never mix uprights and shelves from different manufacturers.
- Loading before fully assembled: Never place stock on a partially assembled unit.
- Ignoring damaged components: A bent upright or cracked shelf clip must be replaced before use — contact us for replacement parts.
- Overloading top shelves: Top-heavy shelving is unstable and dangerous. Keep heavy items low.
Ongoing Safety: Regular Inspections
Once your shelving is in use, schedule a quick monthly visual inspection:
- Check for bent or damaged uprights, shelves, or clips
- Confirm all clips are fully seated and no shelves have shifted
- Check floor anchors are tight (if installed)
- Look for signs of overloading (bowing shelves, leaning uprights)
In Australian workplaces, storage racking inspections may be required under your WHS obligations. Keep a simple inspection log as evidence of due diligence.
